One Arizona Responds to "Declaration of Values" Statement

"The One Arizona Coalition denounces the intolerant "Declaration of Values" that was drafted and signed by a group of Latino community members. Our values were not reflected in the recent “Declaration of Values” that was put forward on May 19th outside the Arizona State Capitol.

The One Arizona Coalition, a nonpartisan coalition led by 14 grassroots organizations supports family values that are truly inclusive of all people, regardless of race, economic status, gender, reproductive choices, or sexual preference. One Arizona was formed in 2010 as a direct response to the attack on our migrant community with SB1070. As a progressive movement we must prioritize intersectionality with other movements, such as the fight for a woman’s right to choose, and LGBTQ rights.

The statement attempted to speak on behalf of the entire Latino community, but it did not speak for us, or the communities we represent. We consider the "Declaration of Values" an example of religious fundamentalism that has oppressed and discriminated against women and LGBTQ people. The attempt to describe the entire Latino community as fractured ignores the real opponents to our communities, which face attacks not addressed by this declaration. This statement instead tries to distract us from the real threats facing our communities in this election year and beyond.

One Arizona is fueled by a sense of justice that encompasses the wide intersection of our community’s diversity. The Coalition remains committed to human rights for all and will continue working to improve the lives of Latinos, young people, and single women, including those who are also members of LGBTQ communities."
